Cookies

A page-by-page explanation of browser storage, cookie preferences and external features.

What cookies do

Cookies are small pieces of information stored by a browser. Similar storage mechanisms can remember preferences or support a feature. Their purpose depends on the website and service involved. A cookie-preference message is not, by itself, evidence that every external script is prevented from loading before a choice is made.

Some directory pages use a cookie named jbcookies to remember a cookie-banner choice. The restored banner code sets this preference for up to 90 days. It is a preference record, not a complete inventory of every cookie that an external feature might use. Browser settings or a different hosting configuration can affect what is stored.

Third-party services

Some directory pages include Google Analytics, Maps, reCAPTCHA or other external widgets. Cookie names, duration and behaviour can vary with the feature and provider configuration. See Google’s explanation of cookies and related technologies for its services. External websites opened from the portal have their own controls.

Editorial pages and local assets

The new article and support pages do not introduce advertising or analytics tags. Article photographs and the portal’s fonts are served from local asset folders. The photographs were sourced from Unsplash and their credits link to the source; following a credit link is a separate visit to an external service.

Manage your choices

You can inspect, block or remove cookies through your browser settings. Blocking storage or external services can affect embedded features. Deleting a preference may cause a banner to appear again and does not remove information already received by another service. The control below removes the portal’s jbcookies preference on the current hostname; it does not claim to erase every third-party cookie.

Questions and review
